The prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and conditions which the oral cavity is affected by are done under a subfield of medicine called dentistry. Individuals who specialize in the provision of this kind of medicine are called dental surgeons or dentists. First humans performed dentistry in the Middle Age. In both France and China, barbers are considered to be the first group of human beings to perform dental care practices. The field saw a lot of growth around that time as first academic degrees started being offered at the dental academic institutions.

Becoming a dentist is a long process that involves a lot of academic work. Preparation should start straight from high school where aspirants should take courses that are related to the field. Examples of such courses include general biology, chemistry, physics, and statistics. After high school, one should complete another four years to earn a bachelor degree. Students who have shown exceptional academic performance may be accepted into dental schools after three years of college only, but that happens rarely.

When choosing a degree to pursue to earn a bachelor degree, one should not confine their choice to those that are related to dentistry. It is however better that the degree be related to medicine. First and second years at dental schools involved medicine-related courses, which makes medicine-related courses advantageous. Applications can be sent to dental schools after graduating from college.

Those that get a chance to enter law school undertake four years of study. Usually two kinds of degree are awarded after four years, and the school attended determines which one. Licensing is a major requirement in all states before a dentist can start practicing. Higher academic qualifications are available for those interested.

Employment for a dentist may be private or public. The choice of whether to open private practices of to get employed is their own. Typically, dental surgeons educate patients on keeping good oral health, assess treatment options, and examine patients. The law requires patients to be told all treatment options available before being treated.

These professionals maintain dental records for patients and those in management posts may recruit, train, and manage staff. Management positions also require dental surgeons to manage budgets of the facility they work in. They must also maintain stock of the equipment used.
