Preschools are spaces for learning or educational establishments that impart early childhood education in kids. Learners in these facilities range in age from three to five. Learners are meant to have some education that would make them ready for the mandatory learning in primary schools. In Gainesville preschool is also referred to by multiple other names such Grade 0, kindergarten, nursery school, pre-K, and pre-primary.

Preschools originated from an era in time when school was only open to kids that had prior knowledge of reading and writing. It is this restriction on children that can attend school that led to the introduction of a system that would educate orphans and other children whose parents were factory workers. In 1779, Louise Scheppler and Johann Oberlin opened a facility to educate the children of parents who were never at home during daytime.

At the same time Oberlin and Scheppler opened their facility, several similar facilities were opened in other places. The first globally recognized facility was opened in 1816 by Robert Owen in Scotland. Owen intended to ensure that infants received good moral education to be fit for work. The system was highly successful and produced several kids who had high levels of numeracy and literacy.

According to findings by several studies, the years immediately after birth are very vital to learning. The human brain has higher ability to absorb information while still young in comparison to later years in life. Partly, this is because brain development is fastest in early years. When children are exposed to quality teachers and preschools, the resultant positive impact in the long-term improves their outcome in life.

Education in preschools covers a wide variety of subjects. Subjects covered tend to vary from one state to another. However, some general subjects covered in almost all preschools include physical development, mathematical awareness, physical health, creative and aesthetic development, teamwork, social skills, and play. Additional subjects include literacy, scientific thinking, world knowledge, listening, talking, communication including sign language, and personal development among others.

Most states have bodies for regulating many areas of pre-schooling. The bodies regulate student-teacher ratio, class size, curriculum assessment, administration, quality of classrooms, child-teacher interaction, and services available. Children at different ages are placed under different curricular. To ensure that facilities adhere to standards set by the government, regular inspections and evaluations are conducted.

Several studies link several beneficial effects to preschools, but not all. Some studies post opposite findings. The University of California Berkeley and Stanford found that preschool is detrimental to children in some ways. The part of development that is affected negatively is cooperation and social development while those that are positively affected are pre-reading and mathematics.

As a result of the detrimental effects of preschool, some parents decide to school their children at home before primary school. Homes offer a better environment to children compared to preschools according to some studies. Methods for teaching vary among schools. Some of the methods used include HighScope, Montessori, Forest kindergartens, Bank Street, Head Start, and Waldorf.
