There are several types or kinds of postnatal moods or anxiety disorders. The first type is postnatal blues, followed by PPD or postpartum depression and lastly postnatal Psychosis. About eighty percent of mothers and more specifically the new mothers experience some severe mood swings which are mainly referred to as baby blues.

Ten percent of all new mothers experience major postpartum depression or PPD in their first year. In the past years, some doctors attributed this PPD to dramatic or drastic drop in hormones usually occurring after delivery. About 0.01% of some new mothers experience postnatal Psychosis in their first three months that is after delivery.

Few days or even weeks after delivering your infant, many women experience or undergo through some changes in their bodies. The changes are as a result of their bodies trying to get back to the non-pregnant condition. These changes are normally not the same for all women. Different women experience or undergo through different changes from other women. The physical changes that may be experienced include sore muscles, afterpains and lochia.

Of all the three mood swings or anxiety disorders, postnatal blues is considered the most common. This postnatal blues is at the same time the least severe despite the fact that it is the most common. It occurs probably two weeks after giving birth. The symptoms of afterbirth blues include irritability, fluctuating mood, anxiety and also increased emotional reactivity.

There are some few things one should avoid if they suspect to have postpartum depression. First avoid watching scary things or hearing scary stories. These scary things can really torment them. After delivering, it is prudent that you stop carrying out many duties or avoid an overscheduled life. PPD arises when normal symptoms of baby blues become exaggerated basically to a point of mania.

To avoid such depression do the following. People are advised to research thoroughly on the issue way before delivering to be well-prepared. Some biological factors and also psychological factors and not forgetting relationship factors may lead to PPD. It is wise to also consider evaluating your medical record to see whether there is any medical condition that can contribute to PPD.

Contrary to baby blues, PPD usually develops insidiously three or four weeks after giving birth and basically persist for three months. But for some women, they may remain depressed for a period of eight months. One third of some women may even remain in the depression state for more than fifteen months. PPD is more severe than baby blue. The third type is postpartum Psychosis which is less common but very severe to those who experience it. Symptoms include mixed cycling between depressive and manic episodes, delusions, agitation, low insights, cognitive impairment, disorganized behavior and hallucinations.
