Advocacy is something a person or group does in order to influence decisions and outcomes in a particular cause or policy. There are different ways of doing this such as publishing research, conducting exit polls, media campaigns and public speaking. Advocates are people which provides advocacy support to the ones needing it and they also use social media.

People could choose one among the many policies or causes they can advocate specially if it is related to their personal life. The gifted advocacy is one of them where you are the voice of gifted children that need to receive certain necessary programs. Here are some essential guides in becoming a good advocate for a particular cause.

Administrators and teachers have a line of hierarchical professional authority that is clear and those in the district follow it. Learn the order so you can start talking with the ones at the hierarchical bottom and politely ask to talk with the next in line when things did not work out. This must be courteously done so it is essential to inform them of this.

Set of languages tends to be commonly used by professionals related to their profession and it is the same with educators. Learn the words and phrases so understanding them will be easier and you can help others also to understand better. Communication is better when the need of explaining words and phrases is not there anymore.

Choose carefully your words because others may negatively or strongly respond with what you would be saying. Some terminologies might be fashionable previously but are in fashion now and even some words must not be said. Try to use other terms instead with more neutral tone so your words would be received well.

These things take patience, effort and time to be achieved and a year or more may be lost because of these limitations. Short term strategies might be provided before real reforms are implemented which discourages other parents. Some would even choose to transfer their children to another school rather than wait for another year for improvement.

Schools tend not to act due to their concerns on what will the gifted child be doing the following year if they are accelerated. They would not be sure what would become of the future education the student will have so they delay the things to be done. This should not be allowed so the needs of these students should immediately met.

Document every communication with the educators you had and it is most efficient to do this with the use of an email. The reason for this is that you just can forward all email history you previously had when the need of communicating with higher authority is there. It will save you time to do this and everyone will be accountable in their role of educating gifted children.

You have also the luxury of time to edit the email messages before it is sent specially when its topic is an emotionally charged one. Reread it when the emotions have cooled down or let somebody else read them first so the tone can be checked. Focus with the point you want to get across.
