The Value Of The Haiti Mission

Haiti is a small Caribbean country with a huge population. The country is endowed with beautiful scenery but has experiences historical injustices in the hands of foreign powers which continue to impact greatly on its current state. It was initially dominated by Spain and later France. These countries, more so the latter, greatly exploited its resources to its advantage . Natural calamities such as the 2010 earthquake compounded by the cholera menace have left behind an impoverished people, a shaky economy and extremely poor infrastructure. Today the country ranks is one of the poorest in the world and records an extremely low GDP. It is this state of affairs that has seen foreign people come out to help and even plan trips into the country in a bid to help eradicate some of the human problems being experienced in the country. These activities are now commonly referred to as the Haiti mission.

These missions are managed largely by the church in Haiti which has liaised with other North American churches. The United Nations has also greatly contributed to the change witnessed in Haiti. It has strongly backed efforts by local authorities to reconstruct and stabilize the nation.

This has been most notably been done by ensuring peace and stability of the country, strengthen political processes more so the establishment of strong independent institutions of governance and ensuring that the rights and freedoms of the Haitian people are protected.

Various teams from different organizations, churches and countries plan foreign trips to volunteer and change for good the lives of Haitian people. Haiti outreach ministries, for example, depend on mission teams committed to travelling to Haiti and helping with some of the voluntary service rendered in the country.Most visitors are normally of American origin.

Every person is guaranteed of an opportunity to get a place to volunteer to regardless of professional background area of expertise. Voluntary activities require not just technical skills but all manual. Some activities that one can engage in include teaching, construction, organizing activities like bible study, Contributing to the general upkeep and seminars and providing medical care. Those who wish to spend a long duration in the country can get voluntary activities that suit the duration in their country.

These trips have to be financed by the teams in their individual capacities. Staying in a guesthouse may cost up to 35$ per individual. The cost will definitely depend on the size of the team participating in the mission. Extra cash might be required since picking souvenirs, gifts or products made by local artisans is a common experience. Also in the place of work, one might find it necessary to buy a few tools is equipment depending on the nature of the voluntary service.

In case one cannot make a trip, available options include sending monetary contribution to the organizations supporting these initiatives or sponsoring the education of children who are the hope of a brighter future.

However, those who have visited this country to engage in community empowerment programs attest to the fact that the experience significantly impacted on them. Therefore these missions are not only beneficial to the Haitian people but also to the team members.
