A marriage license is the documentation of the marriage of a couple. Such document is considered as a public file in the state of Georgia. The Freedom of Information Act has mandated the government to allow the people of Georgia access to the GA marriage records whenever it is needed.

The residents of Georgia use the marriage record in several ways. Genealogy research is only one of the many uses of such document. The information that can be found on the document is important in updating the family tree. The document is also needed in dealing with government transactions. Those who conduct a background check on the marital status of their partners also refer to the marriage records of the state.

It basically contains details about the marriage of a couple. This includes the complete names of the bride and the groom. Their personal details such as the date and place of birth are also included on the certificate. It would not be a complete document without the date and the place of the marriage. One would also find the names of the couple's parents and the witnesses.

Records which have been registered from June 9, 1952 can be obtained from the Department of Public Health in Georgia. Records before the given date are only available at the county office where the marriage was registered originally. Certain fees have to be paid but it depends per county. In order to obtain a copy of a marriage license from the state, one has to pay $10 per request and an additional $5 if additional copies are needed. One has to provide the basic information of the document that is being requested. It is also necessary to indicate the personal information of the one who requested the record. One can only get the document if his/her name is on the file or they are an immediate relative of the bride or the groom.

Requests can be done by going to the office of the Department of Public Health directly or by sending a mail order. When doing the mail option, all of the requirements have to be included including the payment. The state office accepts payments for mail request in the form of check or money order only, mailed-in cash are not accepted. One is expected to wait for days when doing the mail order; days can be shortened to hours if the request was done personally at the office. Fortunately, the document can now be obtained in just seconds with the help of the Internet.

The Internet has made the retrieval of records of marriage easier and convenient. There is no need to go anywhere and wait for several days since it can be requested even at the comforts of your own home. After doing a few clicks the requested file is then displayed on the monitor. It is even available 24/7, so the request can be made anytime at your own convenience.
