There are several reasons why residents of Virginia request for a copy of a divorce certificate. One is to use it when dealing with transactions in any government offices. Some request would call for a copy of a divorce certificate and without it, requests can be denied. The document is also used when conducting genealogy research. Unlike other public documents, divorce records are usually the last document being checked for updates, because it is the least important file for the genealogy. Records before 1918 can only be requested at the county where the separation was made legal. A $12 processing fee needs to be paid in order to proceed with the request. Copies of divorce certificates are only released if the one requesting it is the divorcees or their immediate family. It is important to fill out the request form with the basic details of the separation.

In order to get a copy of a divorce certificate in Virginia, one has to go to the office of the Vital Statistics office at the Department of health. If the document is not available in the state office, one has to visit the Clerk of Court in the county where the separation was made legal. The state office accepts mail order but one has to make sure that all the requirements are indicated on the mail.
