Kentucky marriage records are one of the most requested documents in the state. It has been made open to the public since the Freedom of Information act has been in place. This allows the residents of the state access to their personal documents.

Marriage certificates in Kentucky are used in a number of ways. One of its primary uses is for genealogy. Researchers would refer to this document when they conduct an update on the history of a family. The said file has vital information that is necessary when updating the family tree. Some transactions in government offices would require a copy of a marriage certificate. The request can be denied or delayed without presenting such document since it is used to verify one's marital status and identity. This is mostly needed when the transactions involved the couple. Employers would also look into the marital status of their people. Those who are in the dating stage would check on the records of their partners to make sure that they are really dating an unmarried individual.

As the name implies, a marriage certificate would show details about a couple's marriage. One would be able to now the real names of the bride and the groom who got married. When and where the event took place is also an important information that is available on the file. One can also find the names of the parents and the witnesses.

There are several things that one should keep in mind in requesting for a copy of a marriage certificate in the state of Kentucky. Although this document is considered as a public document, access to it is still limited. This means that the only the couple and their immediate families are given access to the said file. A special request has to be filed by those who need to obtain a copy of the marriage certificate of other individuals. A $6 processing fee is needed in order to proceed with the retrieval process. It is also important that the one who requested for the document can provide the basic information about the file being requested. This can be the names of the bride and the groom as well as the date and the place where the marriage occurred. The personal information of the requesting individual is also needed. By providing all of the needed information, the search can be simplified and hastened.

Marriages which took place since June 1958 are the only files available in the state office. Files before that date can only be obtained at the county office where it was originally registered. Some recent files may not be available in the state office; it can then be requested at the county of occurrence. Processing fee would not be the same for all counties. One can also request for the document through a mail order but the document can be obtained after several days.

Waiting for a long time is no longer necessary since records of marriage can now be obtained in just seconds. This is all thanks to the Internet. This has changed the way information is obtained because it has hastened the process. There are several websites to choose from: a paid search or a free web search.
