The term disabled ramps is used when discussing modular or wheelchair ramps that are made for use by those who have disabilities. These are particularly helpful when it comes to those who are wheelchair bound or others who may have to push wheeled devices, such as carts or strollers. The ramps are added at a lot of different public places.

These structures are designed to feature an incline. They may be connected to facilities and serve as an alternative to stairways. The purpose of this kind of unit is to offer convenience, as it allows for more easy access to building entries. Modular units can be semi-permanent, portable or permanent.

Types that are permanent usually have been bolted in place or set in cement. This is in contrast to semi-permanent types that are placed on the ground or in a cement pad. These are primarily employed for short-term use. Both types are often made from aluminum, wood and concrete. Models are made from aluminum and usually more durable than wooden types. They are also easily moved or reconfigured.

Most portable ramps are produced from aluminum. They fold easily, which makes it easier for transport. These are used for building and home use. They can also be added to vehicles, such as vans, to help with loading and unloading of mobility devices, unoccupied or occupied. These are designed with care to be as functional as possible.

In many different jurisdictions around the globe, there are minimum widths and maximum slopes when it comes to these units. Regulations on these are expected to vary based on location. Units that are not as steep might be easier for users of wheelchairs and less of a safety hazard in icy places. In construction, these are usually required to accommodate the general public. In America, the Americans with Disabilities Act is in charge of enforcing such regulations.

Slope and length are important when it comes to these structures. The aspects are known to vary. In the US, slope for business and public models used for wheelchairs and slopes are expected to have a 1:12 ratio. The rule does not always apple to those installed at residences. The maximum slope in the United Kingdom is also 1:12, but sometimes exclusions are made for older buildings. In Hong Kong, and some other parts of China, ramps are not permitted to have a ratio of more than 1:12.

There are a lot of public facilities that follow standards when it comes to length too. In some cases, the ratio remains at 1:12. For instance, if there is a 20-inch rise there should also be a 20-foot ramp. Units can be as long as necessary but one ramp should not be longer than 30 feet. For residential use, 2:21 is a recommended ratio. That is, a 20-inch rise should have a length that is 10 feet or more. Generally, the longer a structure is, the more gradual its slope tends to be.

Disabled ramps are required at many public places around the world. These units make building access easier for people handling wheeled devices or those with physical disabilities. Modular ramps may be found at private or public places.
