Historically, the white wedding dress was a symbol for a bride's chastity, purity, and innocence. Modern brides are straying away from the traditionalism of the past and opting for an edgy, shocking, and unique look for their big day. As with any change, it can be scary to think of doing something away from the norm. On the other hand, some brides are so anti-white that they are willing to wear red, pink, even black wedding dresses. Here are some things to consider if you are stuck between going traditional white or shocking colored wedding dress.

Personality: Think about your personality first when searching for your wedding dress. Are you traditional, unique, conservative, a little crazy? If you emphasize your individuality in every other segment of life then you have likely already considered going with a colorful wedding dress. But maybe your worried about what your mother and the bridesmaids will say when they see you in a non-traditional wedding dress. Don't let the objections of others sway you. That bright red dress may be the perfect fit for your individuality. Instead you can make the naysayers happy by choosing to incorporate a little tradition into your look. You can wear a bridal veil or grab a traditional wedding bouquet. If you are the conservative bride, you have probably realized that if you go with the white dress you're big day could get lost in the crowd. Why not be adventurous and try something outside your comfort zone? Add a colorful sash or some other dramatic wedding accessories to get that stunning color into your outfit. This way you can still have your dream of the white dress and stand out from the crowd.

Now you need to think about how important it is for you to "look bridal". It can be hard for a bride to go with a colorful dress if she has been dreaming of her wedding for years with thoughts of wearing a traditional white dress. Often fear creeps in that without the white dress she won't be recognized as the bride. If you decide to go with a colorful dress you can boost your "bridal look" by adding that trendy wedding veil or a traditional bridal bouquet. If you go with the traditional white dress you can spice your look up by adding a pair of unique shoes or a bright belt or sash.

When you look for your wedding dress make sure you shop around with an open mind. Keep your search criteria open to dresses you haven't considered before. Allow yourself to try on white, ivory, blush, and other colorful dresses. Focus more on finding a fit that flatters your figure and find the dress that gives you that "feeling" when you put it on. And don't forget that if you go with a traditional white gown you can spice it up with a colorful sash, colorful wedding accessories, or eye catching shoes. Just don't forget to keep an open mind.

Prepare to shock your guests: If you're wearing a colored wedding dress, you are more than likely going to feel some resistance from your family. Once you've found that perfect balance of color and tradition in your wedding attire, don't tell any of your guests about the gown. Instead, wait until you're walking
